Large ovoid basin in light marble, finely carved in high relief around its entire circumference, most likely from Italy.
Each side is decorated with a lively frieze of goat-footed cherubs engaged in a joyful dance around Bacchic attributes: tambourines, jars, and garlands of foliage.
The reliefs, which are particularly detailed, feature a supple and lively modeling typical of 18th-century Italian workshops.
The side handles consist of groups of seated cherubs, forming slightly protruding mascarons:
– Two cherubs playing instruments and holding sheet music on one side.
– Two cherubs reading attentively from an open book on the other.
The treatment of hair, plump flesh, and drapery suggests a skilled hand, well-versed in the mythological and decorative themes of the classical tradition.
Condition: normal wear and tear, small chips and scattered erosion consistent with age.
A beautiful decorative piece, representative of 18th-century Italian taste.
